Critical Friends: Amy Narayan, Scott Middleton, Patty Sloan (evaluations above)
Time: After school for 45min-1hr
Location: Grade 1 Classroom with tables and chairs to seat 20 and a large rug for playing games on the floor.
Materials: Classroom with tables and chairs, floor space, overhead projector, handouts, vocabulary cards, game bag, and a blindfold.
Purpose: For many parents, the first few years of schooling can be confusing, especially when in a second language. The reason for this workshop is to provide parents with information about their children and how they learn a second language with regards to content vocabulary, which is challenging in first grade because most of it is new. The second half of the workshop will give them a more practical hands-on approach to understanding how their child learns vocabulary and school and how they can help at home. To keep it simple, only one hand-out will be given and the three games listed on the handout will be demonstrated before parents are invited to join. The materials for playing the games are on the ESL website and parents are shown how to access those vocabulary materials online at this workshop. Hopefully, the parents will walk away from this workshop well informed, less overwhelmed and equipped with some strategies they can use to help their child at home.
